Why We Show Up: Sharing Hope at Massillon Family Fun Fest

Every year, Massillon Family Fun Fest brings together neighbors, organizations, churches, and families from across our community. It is a celebration of what makes Massillon a great place to live: relationships, service, and a shared commitment to the well-being of our neighbors.

This year, St. Jacob Lutheran is participating through the Massillon Area Clergy Association (MACA) booth, and we're excited for the opportunity. At first glance, a booth at a community festival may seem like a small thing. But for Christians, showing up matters.

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus met people where they were. He taught in synagogues, but he also met people by wells, along roadsides, at dinner tables, and in crowded public spaces. He entered into the everyday lives of ordinary people and shared God's love through conversation, compassion, and presence.

Community events like Family Fun Fest give us a chance to do the same.

For many people, walking into a church building can feel intimidating. Some have never attended church. Others may carry difficult experiences from the past. Some are simply looking for connection in a world that often feels lonely and disconnected. Meeting people at a community event allows us to offer a friendly welcome without expectations or pressure. It is an opportunity to listen, to learn about our neighbors, and to remind people that the church exists not only inside its walls but throughout the community.

As Lutherans, we believe that God's love is a gift freely given. Sharing the Gospel is not about winning arguments or convincing people to join an organization. It is about bearing witness to the good news that God loves the world, that Christ meets us in grace, and that no one is beyond God's care.

Sometimes sharing the Gospel looks like preaching a sermon. Sometimes it looks like offering a smile, helping a child with an activity, answering a question about a local congregation, or simply being available for conversation. These small moments can open doors to deeper relationships and remind people that faith communities are places of welcome, support, and hope.

Participating in Family Fun Fest is also an expression of our commitment to the wider Massillon community. We care about our neighbors because God cares about our neighbors. When churches work together through MACA, we demonstrate that Christians can collaborate for the common good and seek the flourishing of our city together.
